CalWorks

What is the CalWorks Program?

Sierra College CalWorks is a community college program funded by the state Chancellor's office to assist students who are current or former TANF / CalWorks recipients. The objective of the CalWorks program is to serve as an advocate for students in meeting the new Welfare-To-Work requirements. We can provide a variety of support services to help you successfully complete your dream of a college education, while also meeting your county CalWorks requirements. We will advise you of your rights as a CalWorks student so that you can continue your education to climb the educational / career ladder to self-sufficiency.

What Programs and Services are Offered?

The Sierra College CalWorks staff will assist you in finding and using the programs and services that specifically meet your needs. Sierra College CalWorks program support services include:

  • Personal, academic, and career counseling
  • Employment opportunities through the CalWorks Work Study Program where a portion of your work-study salary is paid for through work-study funds. This income is exempt from your cash aid grant through the county.
  • Information and referrals to campus and community programs and services
  • Educational expense cards (supply, auto care and/or meal cards - IF funding permits)

What are the Student Eligibility Criteria for CalWorks?

In order for students to be eligible for CalWorks they must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current TANF/ CalWorks recipient OR a former TANF/ CalWorks recipient who has been off cash aid less than two years.
  • Be enrolled in Sierra College class(es) before you can receive services.
  • Be in good academic standing with 2.0 GPA or higher.
